Heart of Darkness Summary

A chapter-by-chapter summary of Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad, with analysis, key quotes and illustrations of the scenes.

Plot overview

Heart of Darkness is a compact, evocative novella told as a framed narrative: a group of men aboard the Thames listen to Marlow, a seaman turned river captain, as he recounts a journey he took into the African interior on behalf of a European trading Company. The novel is spare and atmospheric, focused on mood and moral complexity rather than plot-heavy action.

Marlow’s story follows his passage up a great river toward a remote trading station where an enigmatic man named Kurtz holds enormous sway. Along the way Marlow witnesses the brutal machinery of the colonial enterprise, encounters violent resistance from the shore, and meets characters who reveal different responses to the Company’s reach—employees who have adapted, collaborators, and those who appear to be consumed by the wilderness. Kurtz himself is presented as a magnetic, eloquent figure whose reputation and influence are central to Marlow’s curiosity and to the Company’s operations.

The novella examines the collision of European imperialism and the African landscape through close, intense scenes and psychologically charged description. Its compressed form, layered storytelling, and refusal to offer tidy moral judgments invite careful reading and continued discussion about power, responsibility, and the limits of narrative perspective.
