Oliver Twist Chapter 45 Summary

Noah Employed on Mission

Fagin hires Noah (Mr. Bolter) to shadow a woman and report where she goes, promising a pound for careful spying.

Summary

Early one morning Fagin and Morris Bolter (Noah) discuss the latter’s recent petty thefts and Fagin’s need for a careful, discreet watcher. Over breakfast Fagin praises Bolter’s skill, flatters his vanity, and offers him a secret job: to follow a particular woman, note where she goes, who she meets, and what she says, and report back. Bolter eagerly accepts when Fagin promises a pound for a successful job, and agrees to keep himself ready.

For six nights Bolter waits booted and ready, but Fagin keeps postponing the signal. On the seventh night Fagin returns excited: it is Sunday, and the woman will go out that night. They move stealthily through the streets to a public-house Bolter recognizes. Fagin and a young accomplice conceal Bolter at a pane of glass; the accomplice manipulates a candle so the woman lifts her face and Bolter identifies her. Concealed near a partition, Fagin and Bolter watch her leave. Bolter slips out and tails her from the opposite side of the street, keeping a prudent distance while the woman walks on nervously, once letting two following men pass her. The chapter ends with Bolter continuing his reluctant but careful surveillance.

Analysis

This chapter shifts focus from petty thievery to espionage, showing how Fagin manipulates weaker members of his circle into riskier roles by flattering them and dangling money. Bolter’s greed, vanity, and lack of scruple make him an easy recruit; Fagin’s controlling, theatrical manner and use of accomplices demonstrate his skill at direction and secrecy. The scene also develops atmosphere: the late-night streets, the public-house, and the furtive movements create suspense and a covert tone that contrast with the comic greed of the breakfast scene. Structurally, Dickens uses a short build-up—breakfast talk, repeated failed nights, then sudden action—to pace the chapter and amplify anticipation.

Symbolically, the candle maneuver that reveals the woman’s face emphasizes how light and shadow function here as tools of revelation and concealment; the pane of glass, curtains, and partition are physical embodiments of the borders between watcher and watched, public and private. Narratively, the chapter foreshadows consequences of surveillance and the moral cost of using desperate people as instruments; it deepens our sense of Fagin’s network and his ability to control others’ movements while keeping his own purposes obscure. The point-of-view remains external and observing, matching the theme of watching and being watched.
