The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Summary

Plot overview

Found Among the Papers presents Washington Irving’s comic and eerie tale set in the secluded Dutch settlement of Sleepy Hollow. The story is narrated as a discovered fragment and introduces a landscape of winding roads, old farms, and a village whose inhabitants trade ghost stories as readily as gossip. Into this quietly supernatural setting arrives Ichabod Crane, a lanky, superstitious schoolmaster who lives more by his appetite for food, stories, and social advancement than by practical teaching.

Ichabod courts Katrina Van Tassel, the beautiful only child of a prosperous farmer, whose wealth and prospects attract more than one admirer. Ichabod’s rival, the blunt and brawny Brom Bones, embodies the rough local vigor and mocks Ichabod’s affectations, setting up a comic and tense love triangle. Sleepy Hollow itself, obsessed with spectral legends and haunted by the tale of the Headless Horseman, becomes a character in its own right, shaping events through rumor, fear, and local custom.

The tale mixes humor, social observation, and the suggestive power of folklore. Irving’s restrained narrator leaves room for ambiguity between prank and preternatural menace, and his vivid descriptions of character, setting, and the collision between city-bred affectation and rural tradition give the story its enduring charm and capacity to provoke both laughter and unease.
