Anthem Summary

A chapter-by-chapter summary of Anthem by Ayn Rand, with analysis, key quotes and illustrations of the scenes.

Plot overview

Anthem is a short dystopian novella that follows Equality 7-2521, a man assigned the lowly profession of Street Sweeper in a future collectivist society where individuality is suppressed. He secretly pursues scientific curiosity in an abandoned tunnel from the Unmentionable Times, conducting experiments forbidden by law and uncovering a conductor that channels a mysterious force.

Along the way Equality 7-2521 forms a covert bond with Liberty 5-3000, whom he calls the Golden One, exchanging whispered confidences and illicit names. His experiments culminate in the creation of a small glass box that produces light, an achievement he imagines presenting to the World Council of Scholars. When his secret is discovered he is imprisoned and tortured, but escapes and returns to his subterranean refuge intent on sharing his discovery.

After a failed appeal to the Council and a dramatic flight into the Uncharted Forest, Equality awakens to the unfamiliar experience of freedom. In the wild he rediscovers basic joys, records his thoughts on hidden paper, and reunites with the Golden One; together they begin to question the doctrines they were taught and explore remnants of the past as they plan a different life beyond the city.
