Persuasion Summary
A chapter-by-chapter summary of Persuasion by Jane Austen, with analysis, key quotes and illustrations of the scenes.
Plot overview
Persuasion follows Anne Elliot, the sensible but undervalued middle daughter of Sir Walter Elliot, a vain baronet whose obsession with rank and appearance strains family finances and social standing. Pressures to economize force Sir Walter to rent his estate, Kellynch Hall, and the family relocates to Bath, setting Anne’s quieter life in motion amid changing fortunes and shifting households.
Eight years earlier Anne broke off an engagement to a young naval officer, Captain Frederick Wentworth, under counsel from her close friend Lady Russell. The novel charts the ripple effects: the Crofts, with naval connections, become tenants at Kellynch; Anne stays caring for family members and adapting to new households; and chance reunions with Captain Wentworth in the neighbourhood and later in the fashionable world of Bath reopen old feelings and awkward tensions. Alongside them move a cast of relatives and acquaintances—Sir Walter and his companion Mrs. Clay, Anne’s friend Mrs. Smith, the scheming William Elliot, and the lively Musgroves—whose interests and alliances complicate Anne’s quiet integrity.
Austen’s narrative privileges restraint and inward feeling over spectacle, using social situations, letters, and small domestic events to reveal character, pride, and the work of emotional recovery.
