The Brothers Karamazov Chapter 4 Summary
At The Hohlakovs’
Alyosha visits Madame Hohlakov's house, tends a wounded finger, and witnesses nervous talk about recent events and romantic entanglements involving Katerina and the Karamazov brothers.
Summary
Alyosha arrives at Madame Hohlakov’s fine town house and is greeted with excited, nervous chatter about recent dramatic events: Father Zossima’s illness, a supposed miracle of a son restored to his mother, and the scandalous behavior of one of the Karamazov brothers. Madame Hohlakov (Sofya Ivanovna) bursts out with questions and gossip; Lise Khokhlakov peeps through a crack in the door and teases and scolds in turn. The household is agitated: Lise has been feverish and hysterical; Madame Hohlakov is alternately distraught and talkative; servants fuss and bring water and bandages.
Alyosha, showing calm and practical concern, reveals a cut finger and asks for something to bind it. Lise takes charge, scolding her mother’s slow response and directing treatment with surprising competence and nervous energy. While tending his wound, Alyosha briefly recounts the enigmatic meeting he had had with some schoolboys; Lise scolds him for fraternizing with boys and demands more details about them. Conversation quickly returns to the recent drama: Katerina Ivanovna is in the house, and both Ivan and Dmitri Karamazov are present and talking with her — a situation Madame Hohlakov finds scandalous and tragic in equal measure. Lise oscillates between mockery and an odd, petulant flirtation with the idea of marriage to Alyosha; he answers gently, insisting that he will leave the monastery after Father Zossima’s death and might marry when she comes of age.
As the scene closes, Madame Hohlakov whispers to Alyosha that Katerina is torn between loving Ivan and persuading herself she loves Dmitri, calling the situation an appalling, fantastic farce; she announces her intent to go into the room to watch the developing scene. The chapter ends with the household’s nervous energy intact and Alyosha preparing to see Katerina briefly before returning to the monastery.

Analysis
This chapter functions as a domestic, dialog-driven interlude that sharpens social and emotional tensions surrounding the Karamazov family. It juxtaposes the trivial and the grave: gossip about a 'miracle' and Father Zossima’s failing health sit beside petty family theatrics and Lise’s nervous theatrics. Alyosha’s calm, practical demeanor — tending a wound, moderating conversation — contrasts with Madame Hohlakov’s nervous volubility and Lise’s hysterical caprice, highlighting Alyosha’s role as a soothing, moral center in chaotic social settings. The scene also advances the novel’s exploration of competing claims of passion, duty, and appearance: Madame Hohlakov’s whisper that Katerina oscillates between Ivan and Dmitri hints at romantic rivalry and self-deception already active among the principal characters.
Narratively, the chapter uses rapid, overlapping dialogue and a confined domestic setting to create a claustrophobic sense of rumor and escalating emotion; small actions (the bandaging, the peep through the door) carry social meaning and reveal character (Lise’s control and impulsiveness, the mother’s performative anxiety). Symbolically, the wound and the careful bathing/bandaging can be read as metaphors for the siblings’ emotional injuries and attempts at cure or concealment. The chapter foreshadows complications in the brothers’ relationships while keeping the focus intimate and immediate rather than plot-heavy, deepening character relationships through everyday domestic disturbance.
