Joe in The Call of the Wild

Minor character

A sled dog on Perrault and François’s team, one of the newcomers whose temperament clashes with others.

Who is Joe?

Joe is one of the dogs added to Perrault and François’s sled team soon after Buck’s arrival at Dyea. He represents one of the varying temperaments assembled to pull the mail and learn the harsh rules of the North. In early camps he contributes to the team’s social friction alongside Billee, Pike, and others; his behavior helps teach Buck about group dynamics and rank. As the team works under strict discipline, Joe is repeatedly brought under Buck’s later authority when Buck enforces order among slackers. Joe endures the brutal routine of the mail service—long runs, hunger, and whippings—and continues with the team through the successive ownership changes until the exhausted train reaches Skaguay. Though he is a relatively undistinguished member of the team, Joe’s presence and responses to punishment and command help reveal how the “law of club and fang” shapes individual dogs and solidifies Buck’s rise to dominance.

Personality

Obedient under force
Joe follows the team’s routine under François’s discipline and the whip on Dyea beach (Chapter 2).
Slack-prone
Buck chastises slackers like Pike and Joe and enforces work when he assumes leadership (Chapter 4).
Enduring
Joe continues on the grueling mail runs and through the march to Skaguay despite hunger and exhaustion (Chapters 2–5).
Pack-oriented
Joe integrates into the team’s social order and participates in the collective behavior that shapes camp life (Chapter 2).

Character arc

Joe appears first as one of the newly added sled dogs whose different temperament helps define the team’s social mix. Early on he shares camp with Buck and the other newcomers, learning the commands and routines under Perrault and François and feeling the pressure of the whip and the law of the club. As Buck grows stronger and more cunning, Joe is present among those whom Buck must correct; when Buck wins leadership he actively enforces order and chastises slackers, and Joe is counted among those he brings into line. Through the Salt Water Mail’s arrival at Skaguay and the purchase by the incompetent newcomers, Joe endures the rising mistreatment and mismanagement that culls weaker or less adaptable dogs. He survives to the point when Hal, Charles, and Mercedes drive the team toward collapse and when John Thornton later intervenes for Buck, but Joe himself remains largely a background figure whose state mirrors the team’s general decline: obedient when compelled, wearied by toil, and shaped by the unrelenting demands of sled life.

Relationships

  • Buck A fellow sled dog whom Joe helps define the team social order and whom Joe is chastised alongside when Buck enforces discipline.
  • Pike Another new dog and cohort whose slack or troublesome behavior groups him with Joe in Buck’s reprimands.
  • François Handler and disciplinarian whose whip and strictness bring Joe into line with the team’s routines.
  • Perrault Co-handler whose leadership during the mail runs places Joe within the working machine of the sled team.
  • Dave A steady, hardworking mate whose unyielding devotion to the traces contrasts with Joe’s more ordinary pack role.

Why Joe matters

Joe functions as a representative minor dog whose behavior illustrates the novel’s themes of survival, the social law among animals, and the effects of harsh environment and human discipline. He emphasizes how external forces—whips, hunger, and leadership shifts—shape individual conduct and cement hierarchy. By occupying the background, Joe helps make Buck’s rise and enforcement of order more visible and underscores the collective cost of the North’s unforgiving rules.
