The Time Machine 5 Summary

In the Golden Age

The Time Traveller meets gentle, childlike future people, is garlanded with flowers, taken to a vast hall to eat fruit, and begins learning their language.

Summary

The Time Traveller finds himself confronted by small, fragile future humans who approach without fear, touch him to make sure he is real, and welcome him with curiosity and laughter. He observes their delicate features and playful manners, notices their lack of overt fear or aggression, and quickly secures the Time Machine’s levers to prevent it being set in motion by their inquisitive hands. The little people garland him with flowers and lead him toward an enormous, weather-worn stone building guarded by a white marble sphinx.

Inside the Traveller is led into a great hall hung with faded brown draperies, with a floor of deeply channelled white metal blocks and rows of low stone tables heaped with strange fruits. The inhabitants, clothed in soft silky robes, sit on cushions and eat with their hands, discarding peel and stalks into openings in the tables. The Traveller, hungry and thirsty, eats as well and studies the hall’s dilapidation—broken stained glass, dust-laden curtains, cracked marble—while noting that the people are mild, indolent vegetarians whose diet is entirely fruit. He begins a protracted effort to teach and learn words, using fruit as a starting point; progress is slow because the future people are easily fatigued and amused, but he acquires a basic vocabulary of nouns, demonstratives, and even a verb.

Analysis

This chapter shifts the novel’s focus from technological wonder to anthropological encounter: the Time Traveller’s expectations of a highly advanced posterity are immediately undercut by the childlike intelligence and physical frailty of these future people. The contrast between the ornate, monumental architecture and its dilapidation suggests long decline rather than progressive improvement—an image that complicates linear notions of progress. The people’s playfulness and indolence introduce themes of degeneration and specialization: their delicate bodies and unaggressive behavior point to a society that has relinquished struggle and exertion, while the ruined grandeur of their surroundings hints at the erosion of previous cultural achievements.

Narratively, the chapter performs close, observational worldbuilding through the Traveller’s sensory impressions—appearance, speech, food, and material culture—while using the language-learning episodes to dramatize communication barriers between eras. The Traveller as first-person observer affords readers an immediate, often ironic perspective: his initial disappointment and subsequent amused acceptance reveal both his expectations and the limits of human teleology. Symbolically, the flowers and fruit serve double duty: as tokens of welcome and as emblematic of a society whose pleasures center on ease and aesthetic refinement. The unscrewing of the Time Machine’s levers is a small but crucial detail that foreshadows the Traveller’s precarious control over his return and underscores the fragility of technological agency in an unfamiliar future.
