Sarah Pocket in Great Expectations

Minor character

A fawning, socially conscious relation at Satis House who gawks at Pip and participates in Miss Havisham’s performative household.

Who is Sarah Pocket?

Sarah Pocket is one of Miss Havisham’s visiting relations who inhabits the decaying ceremonial world of Satis House. She appears as part of the party that inspects and mocks Pip during Miss Havisham’s birthday (Chapter 11), returns to observe Pip’s transformation when he comes to say farewell before leaving for London (Chapter 19), and meets him again on the staircase when he revisits Satis House (Chapter 29). She wants social recognition and to be associated with status, so she adopts a posture of propriety and curiosity toward anyone connected to Miss Havisham or to new prospects. In the scenes given, Sarah gapes at Pip’s new gentlemanly appearance and joins the other relatives in the performative rituals around Miss Havisham and Estella. She does not act decisively on events but contributes to the atmosphere of petty self-importance and stifling ceremony that surrounds Pip’s uneasy ascent into higher society.

Character arc

Sarah Pocket’s role remains essentially static from her first appearance to her last. In Chapter 11 she functions as part of the triumphant, performative circle at Miss Havisham’s birthday—one of the relations who display petty self-importance and who privately inspect and mock the awkward visitor, Pip. By Chapter 19, when Pip returns newly dressed and preparing to leave for London, Sarah’s reaction is the same mixture of gawking curiosity and social calculation: she takes in his changed appearance and thereby affirms her interest in social rank. In Chapter 29 she is again present on the staircase as Pip arrives at Satis House, continuing to exist as an observer rather than an agent. She neither supports Pip nor challenges Miss Havisham; she neither grows sympathetic nor repents. Her consistent behavior—attendance, inspection, and silent reinforcement of the household’s rituals—underscores her refusal or inability to change and locks her into the static world of ceremony that Miss Havisham preserves.

Relationships

  • Miss Havisham A dependent relation who participates in Miss Havisham’s staged household rituals and defers to her dominant presence.
  • Miss Pocket A fellow relation who shares the affected airs and hypocritical display at Satis House during the birthday gathering.
  • Pip An object of curiosity and social appraisal—she gawks at his new gentlemanly appearance and inspects him with the other visitors.
  • Estella A connection by proximity: Sarah watches Estella’s interactions and benefits socially from Estella’s link to Miss Havisham.
  • Uncle Pumblechook A social peer in the village milieu who likewise performs deference to status and is present in the same snobbish social circle.

Why Sarah Pocket matters

Sarah Pocket embodies the petty, performative social class that surrounds Miss Havisham and polices appearances. Her gawking, passive presence highlights Dickens’s critique of social pretence and the way status-obsessed relations preserve decaying rituals while failing to offer genuine moral guidance. By consistently inspecting and applauding surface distinction—Pip’s new clothes, Estella’s beauty—she helps show how social approval functions as a hollow currency in Pip’s world and how the machinery of class both flatters and traps individuals.
