Starkey in Peter Pan
Minor character
A petty pirate in Hook’s crew whose tarpaulin hat inadvertently helps rescue Peter from the lagoon.
Who is Starkey?
Starkey is one of Captain Hook’s rank-and-file pirates. He sails in the dinghy that brings Smee and the other pirates to Marooners’ Rock and takes part in the crew’s attempt to maroon Tiger Lily and capture Wendy and the Lost Boys. Starkey’s most notable contribution is small and accidental: his tarpaulin hat is left on Marooners’ Rock and is later repurposed by Peter as a floating nest that carries the Never bird’s eggs to safety. Starkey otherwise functions as a conventional pirate presence—obeying Hook’s orders, participating in the boarding and searching of the underground home, and being part of the larger group that fights Peter and the boys aboard the brig. He does not have private scenes of introspection or individual heroics; his actions mainly support Hook’s plans and the shipboard atmosphere of menace and superstition.
Personality
- Obedient
- He rows in the dinghy with Smee and follows Hook’s orders during the attempt to maroon Tiger Lily on Marooners’ Rock.
- Careless
- He leaves his tarpaulin hat on Marooners’ Rock, which Peter later finds and uses to fashion a lifesaving craft.
- Typical pirate
- He takes part in the crew’s rough handling of the Lost Boys and the removal of the underground house toward the ship.
- Unremarked
- He has no private moments or moral reflection recorded; he appears only in the service of the crew’s actions.
Character arc
Starkey’s role is essentially static across the chapters in which he appears. He first appears as part of the dinghy crew that brings pirates to Marooners’ Rock, acting as one of Hook’s obedient men during the attempt to maroon Tiger Lily and to capture Wendy. His inadvertent loss of the tarpaulin hat on the rock creates an unexpected turning point: Peter uses that hat as the floating nest that saves the Never bird’s eggs and aids his own rescue. Afterward Starkey resumes his place among Hook’s sailors, contributing to the search and seizure of the Lost Boys’ underground home and to the later shipboard conflict. He does not undergo a personal transformation or gain a distinct subplot; instead he remains a background figure whose small carelessness has an outsized, helpful consequence for Peter. When the final battle routs or scatters the pirates, Starkey blends into the undistinguished fates assigned to most of the crew rather than emerging changed or redeemed.
Relationships
- Captain Hook A subordinate member of Hook’s pirate crew who carries out the captain’s orders.
- Mr. Smee A shipmate who rows with Starkey in the dinghy and shares pirate duties alongside him.
- Tiger Lily One of the pirates who brings the captive Tiger Lily to Marooners’ Rock to be marooned.
- Peter Pan Indirectly helps Peter when Starkey’s tarpaulin hat is repurposed by Peter as a lifesaving nest.
- The Lost Boys An antagonist figure to them, participating in the rough capture and removal of their underground home.
Why Starkey matters
Starkey functions less as an individual and more as part of the broader pirate force that establishes danger and threat on the island. His careless loss of the tarpaulin hat provides a small but crucial plot device: it enables Peter’s improvised rescue and highlights how incidental details can upend a villainous plan. As a background pirate, Starkey helps make Hook’s crew feel populous and menacing, reinforcing themes of childhood resourcefulness against adult malice and the way small, overlooked things (a discarded hat, a bird’s sacrifice) can change outcomes in the children’s favor.
