The Yeehats in The Call of the Wild
Antagonist
An inland Indigenous hunting party that surprises and destroys Thornton's placer camp, triggering the story's final rupture.
Who is The Yeehats?
The Yeehats are an inland Indigenous hunting party moving through the northern woods, alert for camps, dogs, and anything out of place. They first appear as a distant presence whose tracks Buck detects as an ominous trail toward the placer. Their motive is survival and territorial use of the land: they patrol and hunt the region as their people have always done. In Chapter 7 they attack Thornton’s camp by night, killing and mortally wounding members of the small party, destroying the settlement, and drowning John Thornton in the pool. Their assault shatters the last human bond tying Buck to civilization. After the massacre, Buck retaliates savagely, slaughtering many of the attackers in immediate revenge. The Yeehats then become figures of local fear and storytelling: the survivors spread tales about the Ghost Dog who haunts them, a legend sparked by Buck’s final disappearance and the massacre’s violence.

Character arc
The Yeehats move from an implied, watchful presence in the northern woods to the decisive agents of destruction who end the placer camp and the human life within it. At first they are only suggested by tracks and Buck’s growing unease; their approach shifts the tone from wilderness routine to human tension. When they strike, they do so with ruthless efficiency—mortally wounding Hans and Nig, annihilating the camp, and causing John Thornton’s death. Their attack severs Buck’s last human bond and provokes Buck’s savage revenge in which he kills many of them. After the event the Yeehats do not disappear; instead they carry away the story, becoming the primary transmitters of a legend—the Ghost Dog—that marks their people as fearful witnesses to the wild’s reclamation. Thus their role changes from active hunters in the landscape to the storytellers of Buck’s myth among humans, forever altered by the violence they both inflicted and suffered.

Why The Yeehats matters
The Yeehats embody the book’s collision between human societies and the wild: they are part of the land’s human history and their sudden, lethal intervention reminds the reader that the North is already lived-in and policed. Their attack precipitates Buck’s final break from human ties and ushers in the novel’s mythic ending, showing how violence and survival shape both individual destiny and communal memory. As transmitters of the Ghost Dog legend, they also illustrate how humans interpret and narrate the untamable forces they encounter.
