Treasure Island Summary

A chapter-by-chapter summary of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, with analysis, key quotes and illustrations of the scenes.

Plot overview

Treasure Island is Robert Louis Stevenson’s seafaring adventure about a boy drawn into the dangerous world of pirates, maps, and buried gold. Written in vivid, direct prose, the novel unfolds as a suspenseful coming-of-age tale told largely from the perspective of young Jim Hawkins, whose ordinary life at his family’s inn is upended by a mysterious lodger and a discovered sea-chest.

When the scarred seaman Billy Bones dies at the Admiral Benbow, Jim and his mother recover a map that promises Captain Flint’s hidden treasure. Squire Trelawney funds an expedition and hires a crew for the Hispaniola, while Dr. Livesey and Captain Smollett provide counsel and caution. Among the men is the charismatic and duplicitous Long John Silver, a one-legged innkeeper who befriends Jim even as Jim overhears plans of mutiny. On the island Jim encounters marooned Ben Gunn and becomes enmeshed in a tense struggle between the officers and a covert band of buccaneers. The story moves from shipboard unease to desperate small-scale warfare ashore, testing loyalties and forcing Jim to act beyond his years.

Stevenson’s novel blends suspense, colorful characters, and moral ambiguity, keeping readers invested in the human conflicts as much as the hunt for treasure.
