A chapter-by-chapter summary of Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare, with analysis, key quotes and illustrations of the scenes.

Plot overview

Romeo and Juliet is a five-act tragedy by William Shakespeare that follows two young lovers caught between their families’ long-standing feud. Set in Verona, the play opens with a public brawl between servants of the Capulets and Montagues and introduces Romeo, a Montague, who is initially pining for another woman.

At a Capulet feast Romeo meets Juliet, the daughter of his family’s rivals, and they fall instantly in love. With help from friends and the kindly Friar Laurence, they arrange a secret marriage to unite their houses. Tensions escalate when a street fight results in Mercutio’s death and Romeo’s banishment, leaving the couple separated and their future uncertain.

Shakespeare builds the story through lively dialogue, covert meetings, and impulsive choices that test loyalty, honor, and youthful passion. The play centers on Romeo and Juliet, with key figures such as Mercutio, Tybalt, the Nurse, Friar Laurence, and the Capulet and Montague parents shaping the moral and social pressures that drive the action.
